EDF Energy Heysham 1 & 2 Supplier Day

Our Nuclear Industry Director, Keith Feather and Field Sales Engineer Dave Farman were manning the stand in Morecambe this week.  A supplier day at EDF Heysham 1&2, the site welcomed approved vendors to showcase products and discuss up and coming applications.

Fluidic represent manufacturers such as Pyropress, Moore Industries, Kurz Instruments, Micatrone, VEGA and Status Instruments who carry a range of products specifically used in the nuclear sector.  In many instances, this includes EMPHASIS assessment for safety critical applications.  With almost 30 years of experience supplying into the nuclear industry, and as a signatory to the NDA supply chain charter, Fluidic are experienced with the quality control and documentation demands of nuclear applications.

Company Wide Get Together

Our Fluidic Northern and Fluidic Southern offices made the journey up to Fluidic Scotland, Glasgow office last Friday.  We had some training sessions in the new calibration lab.

Of course, timing just happened to work well for the Scotland game too – although a pity about the result… 🙁

It was a great day and night.  Hopefully worth the sore heads on Saturday morning….

All Energy Exhibition, Glasgow May 2026

Fluidic exhibited at the All Energy 2026, held in Glasgow’s SECC.  Michael Campbell from our technical sales team ran the stand with help from Ben McCargo (Marketing) and Marcus Goodwin (Service).  We exhibited some products from our partners Moore, Honeywell, Vaisala, H&B Sensors and Status Instruments.  The exhibition was a roaring success.  Its great to see the energy sector booming, particularly a lot of innovations in green, renewable energy techniques. We were delighted to learn how our range of process instrumentation and control fits into these demanding – and often safety critical – applications.

Vaisala Distributor Meeting 2026

Fluidic have partnered Vaisala for over 30 years, supplying their specialist range of RH&T, Dewpoint and CO2 instrumentation.  Michael and Steve are not long back from the 2026 distributor meeting, held at Vaisala’s manufacturing facility in Vantaa, Finland.  Finland is such a beautiful country, but if you ever visit – take a jacket!!!

Fluidic represent Vaisala’s Industrial and CMS divisions. The CMS range – ie Continuous Monitoring Solutions – is a wireless system which particularly benefits GMP compliant pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors.  The system hold audit friendly traceability of humidity, temperature, co2 and room pressures within clean rooms, fridges, freezes and warehouse facilities.

On the Industrial side – typically wired instrumentation with 4-20mA outputs – this year focused on the new Origo system from Vaisala.

Make sure the guys were paying attention and give us a call to discuss your measurement application!

P4H Exhibition, 2026

Steve and Brad were at Murrayfield this week for the annual Procurement For Hospitals, P4H, Exhibition.  What a venue!!  The exhibition wasn’t too bad either!

Fluidic are authorised partners for DwyerOmega.  Of course, this includes the flagship – and “hospital standard” Magnehelic gauge for room pressure monitoring and HEPA filter condition checking.  Did you know that Fluidic have a calibration able to calibrate your Dwyer Magnehelic gauges on site, or back in our Glasgow calibration lab?  Well you do now!  And hopefully we successfully transferred that message to the P4H attendees too! 🙂

On show, the guys also demo’d our Vaisala CMS system.  This is a GMP compliant continuous monitoring system.  Vaisala CMS is a comprehensive system for measurement and audit safe traceable storage of measurement parameters such as relative humidity, temperature, room pressure and co2.  This could include room temperatures, fridges, freezers, storerooms etc.  Fluidic offer everything from site survey, through hardware and software supply and install, validation and ongoing service and calibration.

Proof!  They were working (or posing!) at least for a little while….

Honeywell Thermal Solutions Training

Last week, Colm Heneghan and Steven Biggs were in the beautiful German city of Osnabruck.  Following our partnership with Honeywell Thermal Solutions, the team are learning the ins and outs of gas burner systems.  Fluidic are an authorised partner for HTS and spare parts stockist.  In addition, we can arrange service visits in conjunction with the Honeywell team, and Fluidic are also able to visit site and give a survey to assess critical parts for your gas burner system.

And you cant go to Germany without at least trying the local produce.  The guys might’ve snuck in a couple of beers….

Humidity or Dewpoint?

Fluidic have partnered Vaisala since our incorporation more than 30 years ago.  Vaisala are an internationally recognised manufacturer of high quality instrumentation, with a specialism in moisture measurement.  One question that we are asked on a regular basis is – do I need a “humidity transmitter, or do I need to measure dewpoint?”  Both are similar, and in fact many of our Vaisala transmitters give both outputs via calculation, but it is important to select the correct primary measurement for your application.  The best way to start this explanation, is perhaps to understand the difference in both types of measurement…

Humidity measurement

Humidity, or more specifically Relative Humidity, is defined as the amount of moisture in the air relative to the amount of moisture the air can hold at that temperature.
In most indoor environments we try to maintain RH levels at around 50%.  As RH is affected by temperature, this would be temperature dependent – but of course, for comfort control it is necessary to maintain ambient temperatures to approx 20°C too.

Dewpoint

Dewpoint is not affected by the surrounding temperature.  In fact, dewpoint IS a temperature measurement.  It is the temperature to which ambient must drop to in order for saturation (or “dew”) to form.  In other words, it is the temperature at which RH will be 100%.  Dewpoint is always less than the surrounding temperature, but the closer these temperatures are together then the “wetter” the environment will be.

A useful tool is the Vaisala humidity calculator.  This on-line tool, calculates one parameter from another (plus several more measurements that are not covered by this article).  Download for free at the following link (registration required) https://www.vaisala.com/en/calculators/humidity-calculator .

The above snip shows that, at 20degC and 50% RH, dewpoint is approximately 9.3degC.

Lets consider the above environment.  Something happens, temperature remains constant, but humidity spikes but an additional 30%.  What happens to dewpoint?

80%RH 20degC calculator

Of course, dewpoint rises – the environment is wetter, so dewpoint temperature and ambient temperature will get closer together.  However, a 30% spike in RH relates to only a 7deg change in dewpoint.

In ambient conditions, it is more common to measure Relative Humidity and Temperature (commonly referred to as RH&T).  The above conditions are exaggerated – of course a 7 deg change in dewpoint (Td) is quite measurable – but there would be no real benefit in opting for dewpoint as the primary measurement (which is typically a more expensive measurement).

Lets consider, however, a very dry environment such as a compressed airline with dewpoint at -40degC and ambient still at 20degC.

-40degC Td calculator

RH levels are only 0.54%.  This is very low, and quite possibly below the calibrated range of the RH device.  More importantly, if – even a high accuracy – RH transmitter with accuracy approx ±1%RH took the primary measurement, what would happen if the  RH output +1.5% reading (ie still within accuracy)?  As below the effect on dewpoint is massive – changing measurement of Td by 10°C.

Low Td inaccuracy

In very dry applications, it is recommended to use dewpoint dedicated devices, rather than RH devices with a calculated Td output.

Fluidic have partnered Vaisala for more than  30 years.  Vaisala dewpoint probes are available down to -80°C measurements.  Of course, there are a number of factors to consider for your measurement application, and this short article only scratches the surface.  Please speak to one of our instrument engineers for help with product selection for your specific application.
