The Micatrone MFS-SS is a flow sensor for measurement of velocity or flow of air and other gases. When used with an accompanying differential pressure transmitter with square root extraction (such as the Micatrone MF-PFA) the MFS-SS will provide flow rate for a number of ventilation applications. Micatrone MFS-SS is a variation of a traditional pitot tube. The benefit of this “self-averaging” pitot tube design is that it takes several measurement points across the duct cross section. A traditional single point pitot requires traversing to ensure it is installed correctly (please contact Fluidic for advise on this). Duct traversing is not required with the Micatrone MFS-SS self averaging design.
Another advantage of the Micatrone MFS-SS self averaging flow sensor is that it is designed to amplify the differential pressure produced. In typical ventilation applications which have a velocity of say 3-4 m/s, a traditional pitot tube (of “k” factor 1) would only generate approx 5-10Pa. This is typically too low to accurate measure with most DP transmitters. The Micatrone design amplifies this DP approx double to 10-20Pa, working well within the accurate measurement band of e.g. the 0-50Pa range available in the MF-PFA transmitter series.

For larger duct sizes, Fluidic recommend multiple flow sensors. The would be interconnected and installed like “prison bars” in rectangular/square ducts or in a cross formation in circular ducts. Fluidic are able to calculate the number of flow sensors recommended for your duct size, and also calculate the corresponding differential pressure transmitter range required. We supply a number of options for interconnecting sensors, including for hard pipe SS tubing or soft tubing. Fluidic also supply end supports, model SP-34, where required. As a general rule, opposite end supports are recommended for sensors longer than 1000mm when installed vertically, and longer than 600mm long when installed horizontally.
